ChatGPT Ads Guide: How to Launch Your First Campaign the Right Way

ChatGPT Ads looks like Google and Meta but works differently under the hood. Pixel setup, Context Hints, creative, and a 30-day MVP test for your first campaign.

When you first open the ChatGPT Ads platform, everything feels familiar. The UI, settings, and campaign structure are not that different from what you're used to on Meta or Google.

But under the hood, the mechanics are entirely different. And it's already targeting brands. We've spoken with many advertisers who tested ChatGPT Ads, saw weak results, and wrote the channel off. That's a pattern that repeats every time a new ad channel appears — everyone rushes in with their Google and Meta playbook instead of pausing first, understanding how the channel actually works, and then reverse-engineering their approach.

Brands that do it right are already seeing serious signals: CPL and CPA at 30–40% of the cost of their standard benchmarks, at the same lead quality.

How ChatGPT Ads Differs from Google and Meta

Before we give you a practical playbook, here are four key differences you need to understand — otherwise your old approach will work against you.

1. Targeting is conversational, not keyword-based or audience-based

Google matches keywords someone types. Meta matches audiences and behaviors. ChatGPT matches the actual conversation the user is having in that moment. Instead of choosing keywords or audiences, you describe the type of conversation (and the person having it) in which you want your ad to appear.

2. The user's context is different from anywhere else

On Instagram or TikTok you're interrupting someone who's browsing for entertainment. On Google you're catching someone who's actively searching. On ChatGPT the user is in a focused, high-trust conversation, working through a real decision, and often describing their specific situation in their own words as they type. That mindset changes everything — what they're receptive to and how your ad needs to fit.

3. Recommendation layer, not interrupt or search

Your ad appears only after ChatGPT has given the user an answer they trust, framed as a natural next step — not as something that barges in unannounced. Copy written to interrupt works against you here.

4. Optimizes for clicks and impressions, not conversions

On Meta you hand the algorithm a conversion event and it finds you buyers. ChatGPT Ads can't do that yet. The system doesn't optimize for "the right buyer for you" — that's your job. A conversion objective is coming in June 2026, but for now you're working with Reach (CPM) and Clicks (CPC) goals.

Before Your First Euro: Pixel and Conversions API

The measurement environment on ChatGPT is considerably more limited than Google or Meta. If you launch a campaign without solid tracking in place, your first month generates almost zero usable data. (The same logic broke Meta after the iOS 14 changes — the Conversions API is already proven there.)

The OAIQ pixel is a JavaScript snippet that goes site-wide. If you've set up a Meta pixel before, the event structure will feel familiar. You install it, QA it, confirm that conversion events are firing — and only then add payment info in Ads Manager.

OpenAI doesn't yet support pixel deployment directly through Google Tag Manager, but you can deploy via GTM using a community template (Stape or similar), or paste the snippet directly into your site's code.

Alongside the pixel, set up the Conversions API (CAPI) — the server-side complement. It sends conversion events from your backend to OpenAI without relying on the browser. The pixel captures client-side; CAPI captures server-side. If you set up Meta CAPI after iOS 14, the logic is the same.

Reporting has a multi-hour lag — same-day data isn't reliable. Attribution windows aren't configurable per campaign for now; OpenAI sets the tracking window on their end. Daily optimization isn't possible. Commit to this upfront: don't panic if the dashboard looks flat on day 5.

What to Track Outside the Platform

  • Branded search volume in GA4 in the two weeks after launch
  • Assisted conversions
  • Lift in direct traffic
  • Set conversion windows 7–14 days beyond OpenAI's 30-day cutoff

A significant share of conversions happen outside the immediate click window. ChatGPT users often see an ad, sit on the decision, and return via branded search or direct traffic in week 5 or 6. The platform stops attributing touch-points at day 30 — your internal attribution shouldn't.

Context Hints Are Not Keywords

This is where we catch most startups. Old Google Ads habits die hard.

A Context Hint is a plain-language description (up to 280 characters) that you write at the ad group level, telling OpenAI's semantic matching system which conversations your ad belongs in. The system reads intent, not words. It doesn't match keyword fragments. Writing Context Hints like a keyword list is the most common targeting mistake on the platform.

The Difference in Practice

Weak hint: "CRM sales software best tools comparison"

Strong hint: "Founder choosing a CRM for a small remote sales team, struggling with pipeline visibility and inconsistent follow-up"

The second one works because it describes a situation, a person, and a moment of uncertainty. ChatGPT's targeting maps the hint onto inbound conversations. When you feed it keywords, it tries to match conversations that contain those words — which rarely surfaces the high-intent conversations you actually want.

A formula that works: Persona + Intent + Scope. Who is the person? What decision are they making? What context narrows the conversation toward your category? Test: read the hint aloud. If it doesn't sound like something you'd say to a colleague when briefing a buyer scenario, rewrite it.

Bids: Start at $5, Not $3

The platform recommends $3–5 CPC as a starting point. OpenAI's recommended floor ($3) is technically valid — but from what we see with clients, it routinely fails to clear the delivery threshold. Many founders start at $3, see nothing for a week, and conclude the channel doesn't work. Start at $5 or higher until you have delivery data, then adjust downward.

Match Hints to the Conversation Stage

A user asking "what is a CRM?" is in a completely different mental state from one asking "which CRM integrates with Slack and costs under $30 per seat?". Your hint needs to match the depth and specificity of the conversation you're targeting. Build separate ad groups for each stage:

  • Early-stage (educational): the user is orienting themselves in the category. The hint describes the broader problem. Creative leads with educational value and a low-friction CTA.
  • Mid-stage (comparison): the user is actively evaluating options. The hint describes a concrete decision context. Creative includes specific differentiators and social proof.
  • Late-stage (decision): the user is close to choosing. The hint describes a moment of commitment. Creative reduces risk and uncertainty: trials, migration support, customer references.

OpenAI currently provides no audience size estimate, reach forecasting, or targeting diagnostics. You can't verify how broad or narrow your matching is. Don't build one perfect hint and assume it works. Run 3–4 variants in parallel and compare impression delivery patterns over 30 days.

Creative That Fits the Conversation

OpenAI states that sponsored content doesn't influence what ChatGPT actually says. The ad appears below the AI response in a clearly labeled box. The user has just read an answer they trust. Your ad is the first thing they see after that — a landing page that doesn't answer quickly loses the conversion (see the hero section framework).

Traditional PPC copy is built to interrupt. On ChatGPT, interruption loses. Winning creative reads like a natural next step within the conversation — not like a pitch that showed up uninvited.

Specs Are Tight

  • Short headline
  • Description up to 48 characters
  • Square image minimum 256×256 px

There's no room for a full pitch. The goal is to show the user you understand their situation.

See the Difference

Google-style: "Best CRM for Startups. Try Free."

ChatGPT-style: "Still updating your pipeline manually?"

The second one works because it names the problem the user is already thinking about. 48 characters isn't enough to explain what you do. It's enough to show you understand their situation.

Strong ChatGPT creative does four things: names the problem directly, matches the conversational register, reduces uncertainty instead of amplifying urgency, and positions the product as a helpful recommendation — not a demand for attention.

Landing Page — Specificity Beats Polish

A user arriving from a ChatGPT ad is already primed by the conversation they just had. They're further along than a cold Google click, but less committed than a branded search visit.

Your page needs to answer three questions quickly: what is this, who is it for, and why does it fit my situation. A page that says "built for 10–50-person outbound teams" beats a generic "#1 CRM platform" every time — because the user is arriving directly from a conversation where they described exactly that situation.

How Campaign Structure Varies by Vertical

The same product in different conversation contexts requires different Context Hints and different creative framing.

B2B SaaS

Buyers actively use ChatGPT for vendor research and operational problem-solving. Focus your hints on their problem, not the software category. "Trying to manage international contractors across 5 countries?" beats "Global HR platform for modern teams."

Ecommerce / DTC

Works for products that require research: supplements, skincare with ingredient considerations, high-end electronics, specialty gear. Conversations like "best running shoes for flat feet under $150" are exactly the moments where a well-placed ad earns a click. Weak fit: fashion, accessories, visually-driven categories where purchasing happens through images, not conversation.

Professional Services

Agencies, consultants, lawyers, accountants — a natural fit. People constantly use LLMs for vendor research. The Context Hint describes the client's situation, not your credentials. "Founder deciding whether to hire a full-time CFO or a fractional CFO for a first institutional fundraise" is far stronger than "Fractional CFO services for startups."

Ed-Tech and Professional Development

People seek course, certification, and skill-development recommendations inside conversational environments. Course decisions are naturally deliberate. Hints around career transitions, skill gaps, and development goals deliver strongly in this category.

Important limitation: ads reach only Free and Go tier users, and the ChatGPT user base skews younger. 58% of US adults under 30 use it, compared to 25% of those aged 50–64 and just 10% of those 65+ (Pew, 2025). For consumer products targeting digitally-native buyers, the fit is strong. For products with an older buying audience, the ad-eligible audience may not map to your ICP today.

30-Day MVP Test: What a Minimally Viable Test Looks Like

Most founders underfund their first ChatGPT Ads test and conclude the channel isn't for them. But that's a misread.

Four Things Must Be in Place Before Launch

  • OAIQ pixel installed, conversion events confirmed firing
  • At least 3–4 Context Hint variants running in parallel
  • At least 2 creative variants per ad group
  • Bids starting at $5 CPC or higher until you have delivery data

Budget — Practical Minimum

A realistic floor for testing is $50–$100 per day, which generates enough delivery volume to learn something meaningful over 30 days. At $5 CPC, that's 10–20 clicks per day, or 300–600 clicks across the full test cycle. Below that volume, you won't have enough data to distinguish signal from noise across Context Hint variations.

A minimally viable first test costs approximately $1,500–$3,000 over 30 days. If that's outside your budget — wait until it isn't — rather than running a $500 test and concluding the channel doesn't work.

Three Signals to Track During 30 Days

  • Impression delivery patterns across Context Hint variants — this tells you which problem states your category actually appears in (the most valuable thing a first test can teach you)
  • CTR as a signal of creative fit — whether creative earns a click from someone mid-conversation is a meaningful read on whether it registers as relevant or intrusive
  • Branded search lift in GA4 in the two weeks after launch — that's where a meaningful portion of ChatGPT's conversion influence shows up, even when referrer data doesn't pass through

What Success Looks Like After 30 Days

You know which problem states trigger your category. You have a baseline CTR for creative fit. You have a read on branded search movement. You have enough to make 2–3 concrete decisions for the next cycle.

You don't have ROAS. That's not what a first test is for.

The Goal Is an Early Start, Not a Fast Result

ChatGPT Ads is still new enough that doing it right — with pixel and CAPI in place, with Context Hints written as buyer scenarios, with creative that fits the conversation, and with a structured 30-day test at a realistic budget — is itself a competitive advantage. Most advertisers we see aren't doing all of this. Those who do will have more data, better creative instincts, and an established presence by the time the auction fills up.
